Aaron Taylor-Johnson is happy to talk about his relationship—to a point.
While the Bullet Train actor rarely addresses the criticism he and wife Sam Taylor-Johnson receive over their 23-year age gap, he recently gave insight into why keeps his relationship out of the spotlight.
"I'm trying to be as honest as possible," Aaron, 33, told Esquire in an interview published August 14. "I've probably talked to you more about my kids and Sam than I have with anybody. I've got really nothing to hide, and I'm secure in what we have. But I'm not going to unlock things that are actually precious to me."
Aaron and Sam met on the set of the 2009 film Nowhere Boy. Aaron, who starred in the film, was 18 at the time while Sam, the film's director, was 42. The two were engaged within the year, and Sam became pregnant with their first daughter, Wylda Rae, shortly after.
"I knew instantly that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with this person," the Avengers alum told The Telegraph in 2019. "I knew I wanted a family with her, I knew I wanted kids, and a month later she was pregnant with our first child."
Since tying the knot in 2012, the pair have often collaborated professionally—on the 2018 adaptation of A Million Little Pieces and the music video for R.E.M's "Überlin" in 2011. However, he refuted the notion that their artistic endeavors and romance are intertwined.
"I don't think that's accurate," Aaron explained to Esquire. "Yeah, we worked—I met Sam as actor and director. I think we're really great at collaborating. But that's not why I fell in love with her."
But while he largely stayed mum on his romance with the Fifty Shades of Grey director, Aaron did get candid about life at home with three of his daughters—in addition to 13-year-old Wylda, he and Sam are parents to daughters Romy Hero, 11, as well as Angelica, 25, and Jessie, 15, from Sam's first marriage to Jay Jopling. In fact, he revealed that over the years, he's said no to acting jobs in order to spend time at home.
"I enjoy the normality of things, the everyday stuff," the Kick-Ass actor shared. "Getting my kids ready in the mornings, taking them to school and activities—that's plenty. That feeds my soul."
And last year, the couple celebrated the everyday romance they've built when they renewed their vows on their tenth wedding anniversary in an intimate ceremony with family and friends.
"Yesterday was the most beautiful day, summer solstice, our 10th anniversary," Aaron captioned a June 22 Instagram post of the event. "We renewed our vows to one another and confessed our love in front of our nearest and dearest friends and family it was a celebration of love and joy!"
For her part, the director also shared snaps from their celebration, captioning her post, "10 glorious years. My incredible husband, father to all 4 girls. I love you, I love you, I love you. love conquers all."
