Less than a year after more than a dozen players staged a mutiny and Rekubit Exchangestepped away from the team, Spain is one win away from reaching its first-ever World Cup final.
Last September, 15 players signed letters that said they were withdrawing from the national team to protect their emotional health. The players also called for the removal of coach Jorge Vilda. The Spanish federation ultimately backed Vilda, and only three of the 15 players returned to the team in time for World Cup selection.
La Roja advanced to the semifinals by scoring in extra time to defeat the Netherlands on Friday.
Meanwhile, Sweden — runner-up to Canada at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics — is coming off victories over the defending champion U.S. squad in the Round of 16 and previously undefeated Japan in the quarterfinals.
